The economy increases in size because of an increase in population and an increase in productivity. so we need more money to keep the price level constant. Also the FED tries to produce a small amount of inflation 1-2% to make sure we do not fall in to a deflationary period which most economist believes slows economic growth. If you mean the act of printing currency, not just expanding credit, then they must also print additional new currency to replace the amount that has been turned in because it is worn out or damaged.
